The College of Humanities of WSEH in conjunction with College THE TOP invite to Kraków all scholars interested in the issues of pragmalinguistics, literary pragmatics and culture studies. Our main concern will be with a broadly understood context, without which language, literature and culture would not be capable of functioning. The pragmatic aspect of our linguistic behaviour has been gaining due recognition in the updated university and college curricula so the issue is also of interest to researchers in the field of applied linguistics. And although over 120 years have elapsed since Philip Wegener first propounded the situational approach in linguistics, which received a fuller shape in the contextual theory of meaning of John R. Firth in the 1930s, at the start of the 21st century we still lack the unanimously accepted definition of this apparently obvious phenomenon. What is more, we constantly need to revise and redefine our notion of context. The Conference venue will be in the historic centre of Kraków, the city known all over the world for its congenial atmosphere and a lively intellectual milieu.
