Profile
The Master of Science in Urban Planning is promoted by the 1st School of Architecture (Architettura e Società). The programme is rooted in the tradition of the University and bridges the knowledge and experience of urban design at urban and regional scales with competences in policy making. The programme activities aim at developing critical and up-to-date perspectives in urban research within the wide range of practices and planning activities developed by the teaching staff. The programme just celebrated its tenth year of activity and its 1000th graduate. The M.Sc. is based at the historical seat of the Politecnico di Milano, Campus Leonardo.
Since October 2005 the Master of Science is being progressively covered in English.
Programme
The courses are activated through four semesters over two academic years. The first semester has the purpose of setting a common frame of reference for students coming from different disciplines and experiences through a set of different learning experiences. From the second semester onwards students are presented with a number of options according to two orientations: urban design and urban policies. Each orientation features two distinctive laboratories dedicated to the preparation of a project and on a set of complementary classes. Courses, besides the Italian context, are facing a European and international perspective, in such issues as: Local Development Policies, Urban Regeneration Programmes, Public Administration and Governance, Socioeconomic Changes, Infrastructure and Landscape.
From the Academic year 2007-2008 onwards, beside the established courses of the orientation in Urban Policies, the courses of the orientation in Urban Design will be progressively covered in English too. Up to a limited amount of credits, it is also possible to attend selected optional courses in the School of Architecture. Qualified internships and stages held in institutional agencies and in professional offices may be offered.
Faculty
Among the Full Professors of the programme: Pier Carlo Palermo, Dean of the 1st School of Architecture (Architettura e Società), Alessandro Balducci (Director of the Department of Architecture and Planning, former President of AESOP, the Association of European Schools of Planning), Bruno Dente, Patrizia Gabellini, Costanzo Ranci, Antonio Tosi.
During 2004 the Laurea ad Honorem in Urban Planning was given to Giancarlo de Carlo e Nuno Portas. A qualified research staff and PhD students with significant international and professional experiences are involved in the tutorship and teaching activity. The School has a rich library, and the Architecture and Planning Department has a library specialized in Planning.
Career Opportunities
The aim of the programme is to train professionals who can deal with the multiple and complex issues of the contemporary policy agenda for cities and regions. Students graduated in our M.Sc. are currently working for Local Governments, research institutes, private firms in the real estate and advising market, in Italy and abroad.
Eligible students
The M.Sc. is addressed to students holding a Bachelor Degree in one of the many subjects related to the Programme (Planning, Architecture, Engineering, Sociology and Social Sciences, Geography, Economy, Political Sciences, Environmental Sciences - just to name a few).
Tuition Fees
Regular fees are based on family income and range from 756.00 € to 3,128.00 €. International applicants who have qualified for a scholarship will be reimbursed, except for the enrolment fee of 140.00 €.
